Sunset over the Bitterroots |
The cows are long gone, as are all but five acres
of the original 160-acre farm, parceled and sold off for new residences
and highway businesses. The barn, a stalwart structure built to
last, continues as residence to a jumble of wild and domestic
beaststhe only difference now being that prominently included
are a couple of two-legged beings and two spoiled house cats.
Our horseshoeing business occupies a separate more recently built
shed.

Autumn |
"With the first step through
the door of a seventy-five-year-old dairy barn, like the hit upside
the head with a two-by-four, it came clear to me: we were thinking
to make fit for humans quarters that had previously been occupied
by cows and goats and chickens, sparrows and pigeons, deer mice,
the occasional shrew from the creek bank, and bats. In setting up
housekeeping in our new domicile, we became the first of the species
Homo sapiens to nest-build and vie for
domain under the broad gambrel roof." (from Barefoot
